Title: Bowled Over
Author: Namaste
Summary: The football bet continues, and Wilson likes his chances. Part of the ongoing fics built around the prospect of House and Wilson betting on the football team at House’s alma mater, which began with Go Blue and continued in Hail To the Victors?, Tailgating, College Game Day and Down The Badger Hole.
Sample:
“Football?” Wilson sat forward, spread the paper out across Cuddy’s desk. “Bowl games?”
Cuddy pushed the paper aside. “In case you haven’t noticed, we’re ignoring you.”
“Doesn’t work,” House said. “Believe me. I’ve tried.”

“So this theory of yours about bowl games and how it’s good for colleges to lose a few games so they play crappy teams,” Wilson said. He leaned back in the chair and held up a copy of the sports section. “Did you ever consider the possibility that Michigan would be the crappy team in this scenario?”

“You’re in my chair,” House grumbled, and tapped his cane against Wilson’s leg.

“It’s my chair,” Cuddy corrected, “and my office. How did you get in here?”

Wilson stood and moved over to another chair. “Your new assistant likes me.”

“You mean my former assistant.”

“Have you actually managed to keep an assistant for more than two weeks?” House asked. He sat in the chair Wilson had been using and stretched his legs out toward Cuddy’s desk.

“So about this theory ...” Wilson held up the paper again.

“Once,” Cuddy said, looking at House, “last summer, I had one for three whole months.”

“That doesn’t count. I wasn’t here.”

“Wait, are you actually admitting that you’ve been trying to get rid of my assistants?”

House cocked his head. “If I say ‘yes,’ does that mean you’re going to give me more clinic hours?”

“Yes.”

“Then the answer is no.”

“Your theory?” Wilson asked. “Bowl games?”

“And I definitely don’t have any papers in my file cabinet charting the number of hours each assistant lasted after our first meeting.”

“What does work?”

“Let him bitch for a while, get it out of his system.”

“I’m not bitching,” Wilson said.

“No, you’re bragging. That’s even more annoying.”

“But it’s not annoying when you brag?”

“Of course not, because I’ve got good reasons to brag. I ever tell you about the time I diagnosed a woman with a cat allergy over the phone?”

“Many times. And now you’re just trying to distract me.”

“Is it working?”

“No.”

House waved one hand toward him. “Fine. Go ahead and brag. Get it out of your system while you can.”

“You sure?” Wilson smiled. “It’s going to take a while to get it out of my system. Nearly a month.”

“It’s going to be a long month,” Cuddy mumbled.

Wilson picked up the paper again, pointing to the college football bowl schedule. “Florida, ranked ninth in the nation, against unranked Michigan,” Wilson said, “New Year’s Day.”

“Appalachian State was unranked,” House said.

“Now you want to talk about Appalachian State?”

“It seemed appropriate.”

“Even if Michigan somehow managed to win, it still wouldn’t be as much fun as Appalachian State beating Michigan in the first place.”

“Well if you’re so confident, maybe you’d like to change the bet, ” House said.

Cuddy stared at House. “Even you’re not that stupid, are you?”

House shrugged. “Apparently.” He turned to Wilson. “Another hundred bucks if Michigan doesn’t beat the 10-point spread.”

“So if they lose the game, I get two hundred?”

“Right.”

“And if they lose by more than ten points, I get another hundred?”

House nodded. “But if they win, I get one extra dinner per week for the life of the bet.”

Wilson stared down at the carpet, then looked up at Cuddy. “You want a piece of this too?”

Cuddy shook her head. “I’m not crazy.”

“Neither am I.” Wilson turned to House. “I’ve always liked Florida,” he said, and held out his hand. “You’re on, and bring cash. Twenties and higher will be fine.”

Wilson deserves his opportunities to brag, don't you think?

I love that this series is making me more interested in college football than I have been in years.

Florida, eh? Well, I guess that means I don't have to waste an early pick on Michigan this year, since there's no way my father is going to try and steal them away from me now.

Does House get anything if Michigan loses by less than 10?

Heh. I know. I was actually checking the BCS results on Sunday to find out who they were going to be playing, when typically I don't care either.

On the 10 points ... if Michigan loses by less than ten, then the original bet is still on, so House still owes Wilson $200 -- if they fail to beat the spread, he owes another $100. But if they actually win, he gets antoher meal out of the deal, without risking another hundred outright.

Ah, got it. I wasn't sure if Wilson paid a penalty if Michigan beat the spread but didn't win. No wonder he took the bet!

Oh, poor, poor Michigan. But we hate Florida around here, so go Wolverines!

My niece and nephew both went to Florida State, so I've got extra reason to root for Michigan. But unlike House, I'm not dumb enough to bet on them.

With Wilson on this one guys! Lol! After all, even though I pretty much hate football, I can't go to UF and not be a Gator! :-P

I think almost everyone is going to be with Wilson on this one. Heck, even the Ann Arbor News up here is having problems finding reasons why Michigan will win. (Sentiment, is basically it.)

I'm a UF student and actually this story has a whole new hilarity for me now that FL is playing Michigan for the bowl game... in orlando... ^_^

Another Gator? Geez, there are a lot of you out there, aren't there? I've got family in Florida (St. Pete, to be precise) but they're Florida State alums.

Gator Alum... we're like locusts...

well I'm about to be an alum, one more week... My last gator game, for awhile at least, was the UF v. FSU game... I know a bunch of people going to the Michigan game though because it's so close.

Haha...

Gotta love palmetto bugs... I always like to say that when your cockroaches are the size of small rodents you have to rename them... ^_^

you do this on purpose, don't you? although i must admit, your football fics don't disrupt my writing 'voices', and ohmygawd, they're fun! especially under the current circumstances. ;)

so... we gonna get a few more of these between now and the Big Game? 'cuz i'd sure like to get a bit more use outta that shiny new icon to your left, created just for your wolverine v. gator series./not-so-subtle hint

and like i said, you should be able to get a nice big head start on the gator victory bowl game fic itself! hee.

on, and GO GATORS!

Spiffy icon there, KN. I suspect I'll have one more fic before the Bowl Game (got to set everything up after all, since I need to get House, Wilson and Cuddy in the same room watching the game for fic purposes). But right now I've got another fic and more non-fic related things that are hanging over my head.

I love these little snippets so much!

“And I definitely don’t have any papers in my file cabinet charting the number of hours each assistant lasted after our first meeting.” is my favourite line - it made me grin like a loon.
