Title: By The Numbers
Author: Namaste
Summary: What are you supposed to think when your boss pulls a stunt like House does? Five drabbles from the POV of five remaining fellowship candidates. Spoilers for “97 Seconds.”

House is exciting. He’s also scary as hell.

Ridiculously Old Fraud

“He’s crazy,” Brennan says, and no one answers. “Right?” he asks, but there’s still no answer, nothing but a squeaking chair as someone moves.

Dobson thinks House isn’t any crazier today than yesterday, or last week, or the week before, but doesn’t say anything. Maybe House was crazier when he let him stay, when he didn’t fire him the minute he found out he wasn’t really a doctor.

The first time he heard House’s name, someone claimed he was crazy. The second time someone insisted he was genius. Maybe both are true. He’s still not sure, so he keeps quiet.

--------

6/9

“He electrocuted himself,” Brennan tries again. “That’s not normal.”

Kutner shrugs, “What’s normal?” he asks, but pauses in swinging his stethoscope, the chestpiece dropping into his palm. He holds it, feeling cool metal against his skin.

Brennan’s right. It’s crazy, but that’s what Kutner expected, right? It’s what he wanted. Even before House started hiring, Kutner sought out every story, every rumor about what House had done. It was exciting, nothing like the medicine he was expected to practice, the kind he was supposed to admire.

But electrocution ... he shakes his head. House is exciting. He’s also scary as hell.

-------

The Plastic Surgeon

“Why would he...” Brennan doesn’t finish the question. He doesn’t have to.

Taub almost tells him not to ask. “Don’t judge,” one of his mentors once said. “When someone comes to you for surgery, just smile, say she’ll look beautiful, cash her check and you’ll make a fortune.”

So he didn’t ask why mothers brought in their 16-year-old daughters for nose jobs, or why someone wanted another face lift.

But he doesn’t want that life anymore. He wants to know why, and wonders if House will teach him how to ask, or will just leave him with more questions.

------

The Mormon

“Maybe it was an accident,” Cole says.

He wants to believe that. Why would God give so much power, so much intelligence to a man who’d throw it all away? Maybe that’s an accident, too, he thinks, then can hear his mother’s voice, see her shake her head and claim that God doesn’t make mistakes.

House would only say that there isn’t a God, that no one gave him anything, that House’s intelligence is just a fluke of nature, of genetics.

Cole has never questioned God’s existence. But since meeting House, he finds himself wondering about things only God knows.

------

Cutthroat Bitch

“It was no accident,” Volakis says.

She’s done her time in the ER, done chest compressions until her arms and back ache, knows what it’s like to take the paddles in her hands, shock life back into lifeless bodies.

This was different. When she closes her eyes she still sees the dark room, House lying on the floor, his eyes staring up at nothing. She still feels the warmth under her fingers when she laid them on his neck, felt nothing beneath his skin, no response, no pulse.

Everyone keeps asking, why him? But she can’t stop asking, why her?

This is my favorite 97 fic and it has been quite the inspiration. I love how their thoughts match the characters so well. I didn't even need the character name to know who was talking. The The Mormon and The Plastic Surgeon were my favorite.

Thanks. I was debating whether to put the identifying tags on each drabble, but figured it wouldn't hurt.

Oh, very nice. You've used what little we know about each of them so well. I can't even pick a favorite!

Thanks. I do think that they're starting to give us just enough information to go on with each of the candidates, and I just couldn't resist.

It's fascinating how exposure to House has already made the ducklings-to-be start questioning what they thought they knew about House and what they thought they knew about themselves. But I suppose that is actually what House wants ;-)

I liked how you circled elegantly around the different POVs; I feel like I know the characters better now, despite the drabble length -- and that I would like to know more about them.

Ah Hah. You've discovered my secret plan. I know there's been a lot of resistence out there to the new candidates, but I was surprised once I started thinking about it how easy it was to find unique issues for each one.

I am liking your secret plan very much! I think the new fellows are refreshing and nicely conflicted :-)

So fantastic. And I LOVE that you still called her Cutthroat Bitch. *laughs* I love all the different perspectives and thoughts that each student brings to the eternal question of Why House Would Stick a Metal Knife in a Wall Socket.

*giggles* I think everyone but Cutthroat Bitch would be disappointed if they ever got the answer. She'd still be horrified. I hope this keeps her from turning into a viciously driven Cutthroat Bitch Supreme.

But I like Cutthroat Bitch -- and the fact that there's more to her than just being a cutthroat bitch.

I like these so much. They're such great little snapshots of everyone around this event. I particularly like Cole's line: But since meeting House, he finds himself wondering about things only God knows. That's the great mystery of House at work.

Yep, just meet House and he's got you re-thinking your entire life's purpose. Heh.

Thanks a lot Namaste!

I know. I didn't do everybody, but it was fun to start playing with these new characters anyway.

Oh, those are wonderful - it's great to see things from different POVs. I love them all so much, but I think 4 is (just) my favourite.

Thanks. I was raised kind of like Cole (though Baptist, not Mormon) -- don't question God -- so it was fun to get into his head for a few minutes.

Excellent. Driving quickly to some very important questions at the heart of each character. Particularly loved the last line for Taub and Cole. And Volakis.

Actually, I have a theory on why he picked Volakis. He picked her because she wouldn't care all over him. She'd save his life but not get all "mushy" about it.

On the Volakis angle ... yeah, I'd agree with that. Notice also that he was fairly quick to use her as physical support to get out of bed, without it being an issue beyond the physical one. Compare that to his comment to Cameron during the hallucination in "No Reason" about not touching. (Not to get in the 'shipper sense here, but ...) and also his reactions to times when Chase touched him in the past, and how seldom he puts up with physical touch. With the exception of taking advantage of grabbing Cuddy's ass in "Half-Wit."

Greetings!

Yeah, I think she is the most like the person he wants to be. I'm remembering the line from "No Reason" when even his own Self is asking him "Why do you want so badly not to be human, House?" For whatever reason, she seems to have succeeded in traveling a little further down that path.

This was excellent and I love the snippets you show of everyone's personality. I really do hope you write more on the newbies in the future-- especially Volakis. You've got her voice down pat.

Thanks. I've been working on a couple of newbie oriented ones -- or ones involving the newbies at least. Once real life allows, I hope to get some of them wrapped up.
