Since all the cool kids are doing it, here’s my wrapup of how I wasted, er, spent my year.

And I’m frightened. Very frightened to see it all wrapped up -- 25 fics in all, beginning with “Declarations of Independence” posted on Jan. 1 to “Belief, Faith, Trust” on Dec. 28.

Even scarier? More than 125,000 words.

A quick rundown ...

January:
“Declarations of Independence,” the fic where I was afraid I’d pushed angst too far. It was inspired by a conversation I had with a co-worker who has cerebral palsy and our opposing attitudes about winter. I enjoy skiing and look forward to it. Winter to him is the time when he has to worry about whether he can get out to the car in the driveway or if the mall has cleaned up its icy lots.

“Come True,” the Cuddy fic that actually came to me as I was drifting off to sleep, complete with a first line and a the framework of the fairy tales.

--------------

February:
The start of my longest fic yet: “Eight Days, Eight Months.” I’m both very pleased by it -- I challenged myself more with this in terms of content and playing with POV -- yet also frustrated that some people never read more than the word “Stacy.”

----------

April:
Took a break from “Eight Days” to write my first challenge fic for the Clinic, “The Masterpiece Collection.” I’m still regularly happy that the Clinic exists, just to give me reason and excuse to explore more with shorter fics and different styles.

------

May:
“Curiosity,” another Clinic Kickstarters fic, and the first time I tried writing both from Cameron’s POV and in present tense.

---------

June:
“Family Housing,” the longest story I’ve ever put up unbetaed and another one in which the first line just popped into my head, complete with the present tense structure.

“Cross Road Blues” was another fic that occurred to me when I was driving -- like “Family Housing” I was on a multi-hour drive across the state, and for some reason the monotony of the drive leaves my brain free to roam. Maybe I shouldn’t mention that to the cops if I ever get in an accident though.

“About Time,” was another Clinic fic (and voted for the Hall of Fame ... so thanks guys). I’d read the list of words for the kickstarter challenge, thought it sounded like making tea, then decided to use that image in the person it would seem to least fit. Enter Foreman.

----------

July:
“Going Forth,” prompted solely by the thought that House must love shooting off fireworks.

“Comfort Food” was one of those fics written solely because I wanted to write. Unlike “Come True” or “Family Housing” I had no idea, no plot, no concept of what to write. I just started with one line, which mentioned Wilson watching House cook, and decided to see where the next line took me, then the next line, then the next line.

With “In The Rip” we’re back to one of those stories which first occur to me when driving. Guess I should be glad I’ve got family two hours away, huh? I hadn’t even been planning on doing a Chase fic when the image suddenly hit me of him swimming in a rip tide, not fighting it, but instead waiting for the right opportunity to break free.

The great drabble rampage: “Niyamas, or One Night at Wilson’s,” “Yamas, or One Day at the Hospital,” “Morphine” and “Six Things.” I didn’t think I even liked drabbles, never mind liking to write them, until the Clinic challenge came along. Have I said thank you to the Clinic yet?

-------

August:
“Belongings” began by just wondering where House got the box that was used in “Clueless.” At the same time I’d heard an interview with Mary Gauthier in which she referred to the technique of writing by starting by focusing on one small object, then pulling out further and further until you see the big picture.

“Clinic Hours” was the result of too much angst. I needed to write something fun -- and prove to myself I could write humor.

---------

September:
“Icarus” was written quickly, and about half of it on a plane, ironically enough, as a response to people complaining that Wilson was being mean to House.

-------

October:
“A Towered Citadel” took a long time to write, just because Wilson is so hard to define.

------

November:
More drabbles. I began with “Too Long in the Wasteland,” using the song title drabble challenge from the Clinic (Did I thank the Clinic yet?), but after that I wasn’t quite satisfied with the result, so I used the same title prompts in “The Boxing Mirror” with linked subjects and finally wrapped it all up with the same titles yet again in “Strangers Almanac.” That was also only the second time I visited on possible backstories on the three fellows. Seems like there’s a lot more ground there to visit.

“Thirty” was written quickly, in one evening. I like giving myself an excuse to write something short every once in a while, that doesn’t really mean anything in the big picture.

-----

December:
“All is Bright” was wholly to cheer myself up.

“Belief, Faith, Trust” began with an argument between House and Wilson about whether to believe patients, and then it was just a matter of building the rest of the fic around it.

Geez, but that’s a lot.

Anyway. Back to new fic.

The next one is on the subject of when House’s parents met Wilson. A preview:

Greg shook his head and covered his eyes with one hand. With the other he gestured across the desk. “Mom, this is Wilson, Wilson, my Mom.”

Blythe took in the white coat, the name embroidered above the left chest pocket partially obscured by a half-dozen pens. “Nice to meet you, Dr. Wilson,” she said.

He stood. “Call me James,” he said, and shook her hand. Blythe liked the way he looked her in the eye, making her feel as if she was the most important person in the room.

“Call him Jimmy, he loves that,” Greg said, and James smiled slightly, turned back toward him.

Heh. One writer I'm a fan of (not this fandom) just finished a lovely fic novel of over 300,000 words. That's when you know you're obsessed. :) And what matters is that your words were well-written. Which they were. Your stories were some of the first I read that took on House's backstory as something lived instead of something gone past. And I can't get enough of well-thought-out backstory in this fandom, so thanks for that. Can't wait for the next one.

Sometimes its more of a challenge to me to not write backstory. As much as I think that characters can't be wholly explained by what's happened to them in their past, I still think there are clues there that do help to unravel a little of it.

I'd say that was time well wasted spent. *g*

And over 125,000 words. That's a 500-page novel in one year, you know. For the win!

Like I said, scary. Sometimes I feel a little guilty about the amount of fanfic I write, as if I should be devoting my time to "pure" original characters and fiction. But then I hadn't done very much creative writing for years, and this brand of writing gives me an outlet I hadn't used regularly. So I ignore the guilt. (Though I do keep telling myself that I should try to write something original sometime.)

I love the snippet from the upcoming fic. Wilson and Blythe's meeting is a wonderful idea.

“Icarus” was written quickly, and about half of it on a plane, ironically enough, as a response to people complaining that Wilson was being mean to House.

Really enjoyed the fic, but I'm afraid to say that, though I love him and though I understand his point of view, I still think his handling of House's pain possibly-then-definitely coming back was pretty bad (first he tells him that he's been overworking himself and is being a baby about it and that his leg is definitely not getting worse, then, next episode he tells him that he's in denial and that his leg is in fact getting worse and that it's because he's not exercising enough - simultaneously rubbing salt in the wound which he created from the misdiagnosis, which I never saw as being that different from any of his other cases - he always does crazy tests and always finds theories that just fit). Frankly, I would hate it if a friend treated me the way Wilson treated me the way Wilson sometimes treats House (then again, the reverse also applies) - he lets things go sometimes that he shouldn't, but then gets mad at weird times and sort of kicks House when he's down (when House broke it off with Stacy, for example).

But. I do love him, and get that he wants to help House, and that he is entirley justifed in that because House really does need it. But if House resents him for some of it, I don't blame him.

...Aaanyway. Heh. Now that that tangential rant's out of my system. This is a truly impressive list of fics. I enjoyed every one of them. It's interesting reading how they came into being.

I definitely agree that Wilson hasn't handled House's meds and pain issue as well as he should. Part of me hopes that in the future we'll see him acknowledge that, either by taking a firmer hand or backing off, and forcing House to see someone he doesn't have a personal relationship with.

But either way I'll go with whatever we see. That's one of the issues of fanfic, that you've got to work with the canon you've got, even if you're just arranging it in a way you can agree with.

Could you post the links to these fics? Pretty please? Then I can read them ALL (at my leisure). The ones I might have missed.

THanks.
